WHERE THE DEER AND THE ARMADILLOS PLAY

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES ALL ANIMALS MAGAZINE – Fall, 2008

In Harmony, FLA., a single premise guides everything from housing construction to leisure activities. Says Martha Lentz: The animals were there first.

For the visionaries behind this Florida community, going green wasn't enough. They also went wild.

The idea is to create a better place for people, their kids, their pets and wild animals, and it's a very innovative and novel way of looking at how we should be living.

Fifty percent of the community is a combination of wetlands and lakes that cannot be developed. Another 20 percent was set aside for wildlife preservation. These types of measures have won Harmony environmental awards and recognition from the Council for Sustainable Florida.
